Frequently asked questions
- Yes. Any premises offering paid lodging to tourists — including homestays, B&Bs, guest houses and bed-and-breakfast units — must be registered under Form I of the J&K Tourist Trade Act. Operating an unregistered homestay can attract penalty and de-listing from official tourism platforms.
- Form I is the application for fresh registration of hotels, guest houses, houseboats, dhabas and tea stalls under the J&K Tourist Trade Act 1978 / 82. Form II is the application for renewal of the same registration before expiry.
- Yes. Travel agents, excursion agents, adventure & sport tour operators and Hajj / Ummrah service providers in J&K must obtain a separate Tourism Department registration in addition to their GST and Shops & Establishment registrations. IATA / TAAI / IATO membership is optional but improves credibility.
- End-to-end, registration typically takes 15–45 days depending on category. Small premises (homestays, tea stalls, shikaras) are processed in 15 days, while star-rated hotels and adventure tour operators may take up to 45 days due to HRACC / inspection scheduling.
