Frequently asked questions
- BIS certification is voluntary for most products, but is mandatory for over 380 products notified under Quality Control Orders — including cement, packaged drinking water, LPG cylinders, electrical appliances, toys, helmets and steel products. Manufacturing or selling notified products without BIS licence is a punishable offence.
- Scheme-I (ISI Mark scheme) covers Indian manufacturers of notified products. FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme) covers overseas manufacturers exporting to India. CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) covers specified electronic and IT goods (laptops, mobile chargers, LED lights) and uses self-declaration based on lab test reports.
- End-to-end, BIS Scheme-I certification typically takes 4–6 months for Indian manufacturers, including the factory audit, sample testing and document compliance. FMCS for foreign manufacturers takes 6–9 months due to additional verification.
- A BIS product certification licence is granted initially for 1 to 2 years and can be renewed for periods up to 5 years at a time, subject to satisfactory surveillance audits and continued compliance with the Indian Standard.
